Manchester United defender Eric Bailly has revealed how Jose Mourinho fast-tracked him from Villarreal to Old Trafford.
The then 22-year-old Ivory Coast central defender moved to Man United in 2016 on a deal worth around £30 million, to the surprise of rivals Manchester City.
So how exactly did it happen?
“I was in Ivory Coast, in the dining room at home with my mother when the phone rang. It was a Portuguese number; Mourinho,” Bailly said via Goal.
“He told me to come with him, that he liked me since he saw me with Espanyol and Villarreal. Manchester City were also interested, but if Mourinho calls you, you can’t say no.
But what happened to the possible transfer to the mighty Barcelona a few kilometers from Villarreal?
“You can’t say no to Barca either. It just didn’t happen because the interest was not public or so explicit,” added the 26-year-old.
Coming up next for United is a Premier League trip to Southampton on Sunday.
