European Roundup: Lukaku sends Inter top as Madrid closes gap on Atleti

Romelu Lukaku scored a brace and assisted another goal as Inter Milan beat Lazio 3-1 on Sunday night to move top of the Serie A table.

Lukaku opened the scoring with a penalty in the 22nd minute, before doubling his and Inter’s tally with his 300th career goal for club and country just before halftime. Lazio pulled a goal back from substitute Gonzalo Escalante in the 61st minute but Lukaku was in hand to provide the assist for Lautaro Martinez three minutes later to cushion Inter’s two-goal lead.

In France, Lille reclaimed the top spot in Ligue 1 despite being held to a goalless draw by Stade Brestois. Monaco avoided a first defeat in 2021 as Wissam Ben Yedder, who bagged a double, netted three minutes into stoppage time to salvage a point in a 2-2 home draw against Lorient.

In Spain, a goal each from Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos in the first half saw Real Madrid beat Valencia 2-0 on Sunday to move second on the Laliga log.

The win means Zinedine Zidane’s team moved above Barcelona and into second place in the table, five points behind leaders Atlético, who have two games in hand.
