πŸ† World Cup qualifiers: England power past Poland, Germany stunned at home

England recorded their third successive win in the World Cup qualifiers following a 2-1 win over Poland on Wednesday night.

Harry Kane's first-half penalty was canceled by Jakub Moder's 58th-minute strike, but Man United captain Harry Maguire scored the winner with five minutes to go.

Coach Gareth Southgate made a number of changes to the team that started against Albania last time, but the likes of Mason Mount, Kane, and Maguire retained their spots.

The hosts started brightly and were rewarded in the 19th minute after Michal Helik carelessly slid into the feet of Raheem Sterling, and was lucky to avoid punishment.

Kane then stepped up to take the resulting penalty, and he made no mistake as he waited for Wojciech Szczesny to move before rolling the ball into the middle of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

The Three Lions however missed two chances to take a healthy lead going into the break, and they were punished in the second half.

A terrible mistake by John Stones allowed Poland back into the game, with Brighton's Moder picking up the ball before slotting it into the back of the net to make it 1:1.

Stones however redeemed himself with a few minutes to go as he rose highest to cleverly head for Maguire, who found the back of the net with a good strike from inside the box.

The win ensured England maintained their good run in the qualifiers, and are currently atop their group on nine points.

Elsewhere, Spain recorded a 3-1 against Kosovo, who are yet to pick a single point from their first three games.

Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres gave the hosts a 2-0 first-half lead, but a calamitous mistake from goalkeeper Unai Simon allowed Besar Halimi to slam the ball into the net from long range in the 70th minute.

Five minutes later though Spain regained their two-goal lead as Gerard Moreno found himself at the right place at the right time to plant his header perfectly into the right side of the goal to make it 3:1.

The biggest shock of the night came in Germany as the hosts lost 2-1 at home to North Macedonia.

The visitors led 1-0 at the break thanks to a Goran Pandev strike, but Ilkay Gundogan pulled them level in the second half from the penalty spot.

Napoli's Elif Elmas then scored the winner for the visitors in the 85th minute for their second win of the qualifiers to condemn Germany to their first home defeat in World Cup qualifiers since 2001, against England.
