Atletico Madrid regained their Laliga lead despite suffering a 1-1 draw against Real Betis on Sunday.
The Diego Simeone side had no option but to get a positive result if they were to regain their lead following Real Madrid’s win over Barcelona on Saturday; a result that had seen the Zidane side go top of the standings.
They thought they had done everything right when Yannick Carrasco handed them an early lead but Betis, who have had a brilliant season (currently placed sixth) leveled matters through Cristian Tello before the break.
The draw means that Atleti is now on top of the Laliga standings with 67 points; just a point above Real Madrid and two above third-placed Barcelona with eight games remaining.
In Italy, former Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian scored the only goal as Inter Milan held off lowly Cagliari to stretch their winning streak to 11 games as they close in on a first league title in over a decade.
Champions Juventus consolidated third place with a 3-1 win over Genoa as Napoli moved fourth and back into the Champions League spots with a 2-0 win at Sampdoria.
