Mason Greenwood inspires Man United to home win over stubborn Burnley

Mason Greenwood was the hero of the day as his double inspired Man United to a 3-1 home win against a determined Burnley on Sunday evening.

The win, their fifth in a row, saw the Reds cut neighbours Man City's lead at the top to eight points with six matches to go.

In an end-to-end game at Old Trafford, it was the visitors who had the first chance as Chris Wood scored inside the first minute, only for his goal to be ruled out for offside.

Paul Pogba was the first of United players to test the goalkeeper in the 10th minute, but his header that was headed to the far corner was superbly turned behind by Bailey Peacock-Farrel.

United then knocked twice on Burnley's door before the half-hour mark, with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford making great attempts.

The Portuguese took a short pass in his stride and attempted to beat the keeper from mid-range, but the shot screeched just wide of the right post.

Rashford then did well to control a poor pass on the edge of the box then shot towards the roof of the net, but the goalkeeper once again made an excellent save.

The match jolted to life in the second half, with both teams finding the net in a space of minutes.

First, Greenwood fired into the back of the net in the 49th minute after a neat layoff from Rashforrd to give United a deserved lead.

It was level in less than two minutes as James Tarkowski rose highest to head in a corner ball from inside the box and pull his team back into the game.

There were few clear chances in the remaining half, and with the match seemingly headed for a draw, Greenwood popped up to find the back of the net once again.

The youngster tried his luck from the edge of the box and his shot took a deflection and went past the stranded Peacock-Farrell.

United then added a third late on as Edinson Cavani finished off a great team move, latching on to a perfect ball inside the box to easily beat the goalkeeper.

The win saw United consolidate their second spot in the league, and reduced Man City's lead at the top.
