Toni Kroos, the Real Madrid midfielder, will miss Sunday's crucial La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao after coming into touch with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. He will have to self-isolate as per the standard procedure.
On Friday morning, Kroos had an antigen test, which came back negative.
"Real Madrid reports that our player Toni Kroos is currently in isolation after being in contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19, although all tests carried out on the player have come back negative," a club statement said.
Even if Kroos' latest test is negative, he will be unable to travel to Bilbao due to La Liga regulations.
Kroos will not be permitted to join the team unless he has a positive test in the coming days. Kroos has been an important player for Zinedine Zidane this season, scoring three goals and assisting on nine others in 42 games across all competitions.
In preparation for this weekend's crucial game in Bilbao, Zidane rested Kroos in Madrid's 4-1 league win against Granada on Thursday.
Madrid is now in second place in La Liga, two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid, with two games remaining.
