🇦🇷 Former Argentina star on why Messi can't become greater than Maradona

A former Argentina World Cup winner has argued that Diego Maradona archived far higher adulation and glory than the world's greatest ever superstar Lionel Messi.

Mario Kempes, who was Maradona's teammate in the 1978 FIFA World Cup triumph, suggested that Messi probably has to win four straight World Cup titles to reach Maradona's greatness.

"For Messi, the misfortune is that he was the replacement for Diego Maradona," he told ESPN Mexico.

"And Diego, with the idolatry that he has carried around the world, it is very difficult to overshadow him.

"If he wants to be better than Maradona, he is not going to achieve it even if he wins four world championships in a row.

"He still does not have the title of world champion. The World Cup, he does not have it. No matter how much he wins what he wins, it can never be compared to what Diego did," Kempes concluded.

Messi's next opportunity to win the World title comes next year in Qatar.

Meanwhile, Messi is on holiday ahead of returning to FC Barcelona where he is expected to sign a new deal the previous contract expired last month.
