Uganda Cup: five-star URA impose heavy tax on Synergy
Three-time Uganda Cup winners, URA FC, advanced to the round of 16 after eliminating Buganda regional league side Synergy FC in a thrashing 5-1 victory at Namboole on Friday.
The tax collectors were coming from a 1-0 loss to KCCA at the same venue in a league match earlier on.
Synergy, who were eliminated from the semifinal last year by eventual winners KCCA, threatened to pull a shocker of the day when they went ahead courtesy of a Robert Ssentongo Kayuni’s fifth minute penalty.
However, the league moneybags reacted quickly and in style through rejuvenated attacking midfielder Saidi Kyeyune who hammered a screamer from range just three minutes later.
Defender, Patrick Mbowa doubled the tally for the Sam Ssimbwa-coached side in the 12th minute answering in a Yeseri Waibi’s asking corner kick.
URA could have gone to three ten minutes later but Shafik Kagimu failed to beat the keeper from the penalty spot. Robert Mukoghotya had been hacked inside the area.
Ronald Musana’s 32nd minute strike was also flagged off but Mukoghotya’s effort a minute later counted.
Both Kagimu and Musana, who were unlucky earlier on combined well for the fourth goal just before the break. The former picked a floating ball and split it through to Musana to bury home.
Mukhongotya emptied the bag with another classic long-range bullet that signalled the end to the rout.
