Manchester City strolled to the FA Cup quarterfinals courtesy of a 4-1 win over Newport County who saw their perfect run in the competition came to a grinding halt as younger Phil Foden bagged a brace in the game.
After getting past Rotherham and Burnley with emphatic 7-0 and 5-0 scorelines respectively, Manchester City were looking to get to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup against the least ranked side left in the competition. Despite City dominating possession as expected, it was Newport who got the first real opening of the game when a long throw was launched to Tyreeq Bakinson that bounced in front of him before the midfielder nodded the ball at the corner only to see Ederson, at full stretch, claw the ball away.
Pep Guardiola was wary of Newport's physicality in his pre-match press conference with their aerial prowess coming to play in the game, "They are taller and stronger than us. Substitute Phil Foden also got into the scoresheet in the 75th minute when he cleverly flicked the ball over Bennett in midfield and then delicately dribbled forwards to the edge of the area. Bennett faced him up but the youngster did a razor-sharp stepover and lashes a shot into the bottom left corner.
With City looking set for routine win and another clean sheet in the competition, Newport had other ideas when Poole pinged a ball forwards, Laporte made a hash of his header, trying to head it to Otamendi but found Amond instead, who stabbed a lovely finish over Ederson and into the net in the 89th minute .
Newport's chances of a comeback were quickly extinguished in the 90th minute when Sane won back possession in midfield and popped the ball off to Foden. The youngster glided towards the edge of the box, then cut on to his left foot, and hammered a shot into the roof of the net.
City got the fourth goal right at the depth on the game when Stones cut a delicious right-footed pass back into the box and in behind Newport’s defense for Mahrez, who took one touch before rifling home at Day’s near
