Fred started the 3-1 win over Crystal Palace but failed to fully impress and was dropped to the bench in the clash against Southampton. Pereira impressed in the goalless draw against Liverpool when he came off the bench as a first-half substitute but had to settle for a place on the bench as Fred was given the nod ahead of him at Selhurst Park.

In a pre-match interview before the match, Solskjaer was asked why he dropped Fred to the bench, "We wanted to go attacking with the three front men, Alexi, Rom and Marcus, Marcus is fit again. And Andreas did really well against Liverpool and was unlucky not to play against Palace. I thought Fred came through his first 15 minutes and then he improved as the game went on, but we have a game again on Wednesday.

"But it's the energy of Andreas we wanted to get in. Last time we were here against Liverpool Marcus struggled to get through the game, he was okay on Wednesday night but we didn't want to risk him with him not being 100 per cent, but now he's rested and ready to go and hopefully we can start the game properly."
