Cape Town City head coach Benni McCarthy has backed Mamelodi Sundowns to successfully defend the Absa Premiership title.

The former Orlando Pirates striker made his comments shortly after spoiling the Buccaneers’ party in a 2-2 draw against his side.

City’s draw with Pirates was followed by Sundowns’ 2-0 win over Golden Arrows, a result which took Kabo Yellow back to the top of the league ahead of Saturday’s finale.

“I back Sundowns, now they are going to be more dangerous because they are going to have a lot of time to focus,” McCarthy told Soccer Laduma regarding Sundowns’ CAF Champions League semi-finals exit.

“I think they‘ve got a bigger squad (and) a lot of quality replacements that you can make, I think as much as I say one point gained is better than still having to play, I rather have the two games.

“Their position is far better and in this situation, Pitso Mosimane knows what he has to do,” he added.

Sundowns head into this weekend needing three points to win the title against Free State Stars.
