Football's top free agents released by various European clubs

The curtains are closing on major European leagues paving way for the busy transfer period as clubs look to strengthen in readiness for the next campaign.

Some players are leaving for greener pastures while others have been let go as their positions are taken up by new players.

We take a look at some of the best free agents as the transfer season is set to be opened.

1. Gary Cahill - Chelsea

The Chelsea defender was released by Chelsea after Maurizio Sarri took over from Antonio Conte at the start of the current campaign. At 33, the captain feels he still has a couple of years left in him and would look to secure a club for the new season.

2. Mario Balotelli - Marseille

The Italian has revived his game with his time in France's Ligue 1; first with Nice, before moving to Marseille. After a relatively successful second half of the season, Mario will be a free agent at the end of the current campaign, with reports indicating he might be moving back to Italy.

3. Matteo Darmian - Manchester United

Darmian's contract with Manchester United is coming to an end, and he might want to look elsewhere for more game time. The defender has been used sparingly since joining the Old Trafford side, with many praising him for his professionalism. Inter Milan and Napoli are said to be interested in the defender, as a move to Italy looks more likely.

4. Vincent Kompany - Manchester City

Kompany has been the rock that Man City has been built on the last couple of seasons. The 33-year-old's contract at City is, however, coming to an end, with reports indicating he will be handed a one-year contract extension. He has been pivotal for the club and demonstrated that recently as he scored a goal that arguably won them the league against Leicester.

5. Danny Welbeck - Arsenal

The former Manchester United defender has found his time at Arsenal rather frustrating, partly due to niggling injuries that have kept him out for long. Arsenal decided against renewing his contract, meaning he will be allowed to leave at the end of the season.

6. Diego Godin - Atletico Madrid

The Atleti captain has been one of the best defenders in Europe, but his time in the Madrid-based club has come to an end. He might be heading to Italy to join Inter Milan, but since nothing has been agreed, he remains one of the best defenders on offer in Europe.

7. Olivier Giroud - Chelsea

One of the best strikers in the Europa League this season, Olivier Giroud finds himself in an unfamiliar position. His contract with Chelsea is out, and might not get a chance to extend his stay in London despite a good season from the bench, where he has managed to score more than 10 goals mainly from the bench.

8. Juan Mata - Manchester United

The former Chelsea star moved to Old Trafford in 2014 and has had quite a good stary at Old Trafford, winning a couple of trophies including the Europa League. Now 30, the winger is said to be angling a move back to his native Spain where he would end his career. He is said to be courted by the like of Valencia and Villarreal.

9. Arjen Robben - Bayern Munich

The winger announced that he would leave Allianz Arena in December 2018 after an illustrious time in Munich, winning all trophies on offer at club level. He is said to be interested in a move to MLS, where he will join the likes of Wayne Rooney.

10. James Milner - Liverpool

Milner has been one of the most consistent performers in recent English Premier League seasons. The 33-year-old has been one of the main cogs for Liverpool in an incredible season and has shown his versatility by playing in different positions in his career. It will be interesting to see if he gets a contract extension at the end of his contract.
