Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made a bid of 60 million euros for Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.
Lo Celso currently has a 100 million euro (£88m) release clause and according to BBC Sport reports, Betis are keen to sell him closer to that amount.
Spurs, however, face stiff competition with other Premier League clubs who have shown interest in the Argentine's services.
The London-based club have not signed a player since the January 2018 transfer window when they coughed up £23 million to acquire Paris Saint-Germain winger Lucas Moura.
Tottenham have experienced a taste of record signings before when they signed Davinson Sanchez in August 2017 for £42 million from Ajax Amsterdam.
Lo Celso initially joined Betis on what was intended to be a season-long loan spell in August 2018 but the La Liga outfit triggered their option to buy the player for 22 million euros in April 2019.
The 23-year-old scored 16 goals and registered six assists in 45 games for Betis last season and has been named in Argentina's squad for the Copa America, which starts on 14 June in Brazil.
