Mikel Arteta reveals why Liverpool won the Champions League while Manchester City struggled

13 Jun 2019, 07:00

Manchester City assistant coach Mikel Arteta has revealed that he was not surprised to see Liverpool clinch the Champions League and explained why they struggled.

Arteta played a key role as City beat Liverpool to the Premier League title by a point, but the Reds ended the season with a trophy as they beat Premier League rivals Tottenham in the Champions League final. This was the second consecutive Champions League final that Liverpool were contesting after losing to Real Madrid last season. City, however, retained their league crown, becoming the first team to do so since Manchester United in 2009.

In an interview with Marca, Arteta revealed why City struggled in the Champions League, "We have not had the proper regularity. We have made too many mistakes. The Champions League is being reduced lately to the areas: do not make mistakes in yours and be forceful in the rival.

"If not, it is impossible to win it, because the opponent penalizes you. If you give away two goals and a quarter penalty, you're out. [I am] not surprised because, in a tie, it is very difficult to beat them. In my playing career, Anfield is the only field in which I had the feeling of ‘pájara’, of staying stuck.

"It happened to me with Arsenal, and we [conceded] five. They make you one, two, you see red shirts flying... and you [concede] five. You say: ‘I do not know what’s going on, stop the game, please, because I do not know where I am’."
