Following John Obi Mikel calling time on his international career after the 2019 African Cup of Nations, Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has named candidates to replace the midfielder in the squad.
At the start of the continental showpiece, Mikel had revealed that he would retire from international football after the tournament so as to hand a chance to the younger players. Mikel did not make an appearance in their third-place playoffs win over Tunisia which would have been his final game for Nigeria.
Speaking after the win over Tunisia, Rohr discussed the possible options for Nigeria in the absence of Mikel, "We have to salute Mikel’s great career, he didn’t play in the qualifiers but it was good for the team that he is here. Now we have to look at others but we don’t have many MF in top clubs. We’ve Semi Ajayi, Iwobi, Etebo, Ndidi but we have to work hard to find a replacement."
Mikel has joined Turkish outfit Trabzonspor from Middlesbrough ahead of next season.
