Stoke City to hand Etebo extended break over AFCON 2019 participation

English Championship club Stoke City are looking to hand midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo an extended break following his participation at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Etebo play all seven matches for the Super Eagles on their road to winning the bronze medal.

The new EFL season kicks off in a fortnight and the Potters manager, Nathan Jones, hopes to have the Nigeria international fresh and fully fit before their first game at home to Queens Park Rangers on August 3 at the Bet365 Stadium.

“It’s not an ideal scenario because we’d love to have Peter (Etebo) in the building, but we are very aware that Peter is a very proud Nigerian and we want to see him superbly well, which will only help him to do well for Stoke City,” Jones told Stoke Sentinel.

“I’m really proud of Peter because of the attitude he’s shown here and the pride he has in playing for his country.

“He’s at the African Cup of Nations now, so it’s a difficult one because he has missed most of pre-season but he needs some time off.

“We would love him to come back and do fantastically well for Stoke City and we’ve been in constant contact with Peter.”
