Rob Holding has emerged as a contender for the Arsenal captaincy after coach Unai Emery hinted that he wants one English player in his list of possible captains.
The search for a new captain came about after current club captain Laurent Koscielny refused to travel with the team for their pre-season tour last week, and is expected to be moved on this summer.
Mesut Ozil, Nacho Monreal, and Granit Xhaka have all been touted as possible replacements for the former French international, and now Holding's name has been thrown into the mix.
“Last year [Granit] Xhaka, Mesut [Ozil] and Nacho [Monreal] were working as captains. But after Aaron Ramsey and Petr Cech left - and possibly Laurent Koscielny - I will want more,"
“An English player who grew up in our academy can understand the English spirit and Arsenal values. These are the qualities and more [we want].”
The Englishman is currently returning to fitness after suffering a serious knee injury against Manchester United back in December and has not featured for the club since then.
He is however with the rest of the team for the US tour, a clear indication that he has made massive progress in his recovery journey.
