Liverpool held on to beat Southampton 2-1 at the St. Mary's Park on Saturday 17th.
Soton will have themselves to blame after a fantastic display in the first half but found themselves trailing as the two sides headed for a break. Sadio Mane curler put the Reds ahead just before the half-time whistle with Roberto Firmino doubling the visitors' lead. Goalkeeper Adrian made a mistake which saw his clearance blocked by Ings and the ball kissed the back of the net, with the gift turning a consolation goal for the hosts.
Not the best display from the Reds as they were dominated in the first half by the hosts. However, Jurgen Klopp’s men took the lead through Sadio Mane just before half time. A throw was taken short to Milner and he found Mane in the box. The forward got it out of his feet to get him away from Bednarek and curled it into the far corner against his old club.
Second half Liverpool were lively and Firmino doubled their lead after being given the goal on a plated. From Southampton’s own defensive throw-in, Bednarek got caught on the ball, it was moved inside to Firmino and after cutting across the box and holding off Vestegaad, he fired back across to double the lead.
Soton pulled one back through Ings and it was Adrian’s mistake. All he was supposed to do it clear the ball downfield. Ings closed him down but nothing too bad and he smacked the ball against Ings and it went in.
Liverpool's next assignment will be against Arsenal on Saturday 24th at Anfield.
