South Africa’s interim coach Molefi Ntseki has named the squad to face Zambia in a friendly, it includes several returnees and notable omissions he has overlooked after AFCON 2019.
Ntseki is set to lead the team after Stuart Baxter’s resignation this month, and while the South African Football Association (SAFA) quietly search for the next coach.
As reported on Futaa, Nsteki named his squad this morning, and the leading questions are:
- Who has he excluded?
- Who are the names he's listed to return to the national team after the Baxter regime?
Though none of the new faces are busy celebrating their very first call-ups, many of the players such as Thapelo Morena, Erick Mathoho, Kermit Erasmus and Thato Mokeke will emerge out from the shadows of the international game.
List of new faces:
- Brandon Petersen
- Erick Mathoho
- Thapelo Morena
- Lebogang Phiri
- Rivaldo Coetzee
- Thatho Mokeke
- Kermit Erasmus
- Bradley Grobler.
But as we all know, new squad faces come with omissions.
Several of Baxter’s troops who have served under the departed coach, most recently at AFCON 2019, will sit out this coming international event.
Ntseki has not made his decisions without giving sense to the calls. The former South Africa U17 coach has told reporters that he has decided to give players such as Themba Zwane, Hlompo Kekana, Sibusiso Vilakazi, and Lars Veldwijk some much-needed rest after AFCON and CAF Champions League travels.
List of omissions:
- Bruce Bvuma
- Daniel Cardoso
- Ramahlwe Mphahlele
- Hlompho Kekana
- Tiyani Mabunda
- Themba Zwane
- Lars Veldwijk
- Sibusiso Vilakazi.
The South Africans are due in Zambia’s Lusaka before Saturday 7 September at 3 pm.
