Nyayo Stadium set to host its first match in two years

The never-ending renovations at Nyayo National Stadium seem to be soon coming to a halt with AFC Leopards vs Kariobangi Sharks set to take place in the venue this weekend, two years after the last match.

The final match to be hosted at the stadium was the Mashemeji Derby that ended in a 1-1 stalemate on Sunday 27th August. The stadium was the venue for the 2018 Jamhuri Day celebrations and many expected it to soon open its doors for local and international fixtures.

Speaking to Nation Sport, Leopards secretary general Oliver Sikuku confirmed Nyayo as the venue for their weekend encounter, "We have been granted access to this facility which has been our home ground for many years. It's a temporary measure because renovations are ongoing.

"The management has also informed us we can continue to use the stadium if our fans behave and I'm passing that message to them to be orderly."

Nyayo has been preferred by Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards due to its central location which in turn has attracted large crowds to the stadium. Leopards vs Sharks is slated for Sunday 15th September in a 3 PM kick-off.
