Arsenal manager Unai Emery has revealed that he was with his Spanish compatriot Javi Gracia when he received news of his sacking by Watford.
Gracia became the first manager to suffer the axe in the new campaign, when he was stripped of his role as club manager last week on Saturday, with his place taken by Quique Sanchez Flores.
Emery bumped into Gracia while on a brief holiday in his home country of Spain during the international break and started talking about their next match at Vicarage Road set for today evening.
“It’s amazing,” said Emery. “I met him, we found each other last week in my town, in Hondarribia, when I was there with my family. I was walking and in front, us was Javi Gracia. And in the moment we started speaking about our match, we finished it knowing he was sacked. It’s a good story, yes?”
The two are longtime friends, with Emery revealing Gracia played a role in his decision to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.
“When the possibility opened up to sign here, the first coach, the first person in the football world I called was him,'” Emery said of Gracia.
Emery will lead his Gunners side on Sunday evening against Flores searching for a win, having dropped points in his last two outings in the Premier League.
The Gunners are currently on seven points after four rounds of matches in the Premier League.
