Napoli profited from two defensive blunders by Liverpool to earn three vital points after a 2-0 win over Jurgen Klopp's men in a UEFA Champions League Group E opening clash.
Napoli were quickly off the blocks and had the ball at the back of the net in the eighth minute after Fabian Ruiz shot twice in quick succession from about 15 yards out with his second effort a follow-up saved by Adrian as Lozano nodded home the second rebound but was correctly flagged for offside.
Liverpool's best chance of the half came right at the depth of the first half when a short corner was then delivered in by James Milner with Roberto Firmino's header just flying past the bottom left side of the crossbar with goalkeeper Alex Meret left rooted to the ground.
Carlo Ancelotti's men began the second half just as they did in the first with Dries Mertens being denied by an excellent save from Adrian, after Virgil van Dijk had been beaten by the flight of a Fabian Ruiz dink from the left. Mertens leaped to volley home at the far post, but Adrian saved brilliantly with a strong right hand that pushed the ball over the bar.
Napoli were handed a perfect opportunity to break the deadlock after Andy Robertson brought down Jose Callejon in the 80th minute. Dries Mertens stepped up to take the penalty which ripped the back of the net despite Adrian getting a hand to the ball.
The contest was finally over in the 92nd minute when Fernando Llorente scored his first goal for Napoli on only his second appearance, pouncing on a defensive mix up between Adrian and Robertson after a calamitous back pass from Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool next face a daunting take when they travel to take on Chelsea on Sunday 22nd September while Napoli will take on newly-promoted Lecce on the same day.
