As clearly seen, Kaizer Chiefs has a new fan favourite in Kearyn Baccus - and he wants a legends retired jersey number.
Baccus, an Australian-South African central midfielder arrived in Soweto in June from Melbourne City - one of several clubs he had donned the number 15.
“I also heard a lot about Doctor Khumalo – I wanted his [jersey] number when I came to the club, because I’ve played in number-15 my whole life and they told me the number’s been retired, so I was a bit disappointed but what can we do? It’s okay,” said the 28-year-old via KickOff.
“It’s up to him I guess, if he’d like to bring back the number then I’d definitely take it. But I think he’s been a legend in South African football for a while, so good on him.”
Baccus further revealed that his Durban parents offered him reasons behind the number’s unavailability: Doc Khumalo aka 16V.
“I asked for the number-15 and my parents explained why I couldn’t get it. My Mum had done her research and she was the one who told me ‘Doc’ had the number and they retired it because of him.”
“I guess he’s a club legend and he’s done a lot in South African football, and I’m happy for the guy. I haven’t been in contact with him, but if someone wants to give me his number then I’ll definitely call him,” added Baccus.
Chiefs are next in action at home to Baroka FC this Saturday at 18:00.
