Former Arsenal great tears into Xhaka captaincy

Former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit has torn into current club captain Granit Xhaka over poor displays in recent games.

The former midfielder does not understand how the Swiss international was made captain, following his recent appointment by manager Unai Emery

The former Basel star is not a popular figure among many of the club's fans, who do not think he is fit enough to lead the team.

Speaking following Monday's away defeat to Sheffield United, Petit further heaped praise on french youngster Mateo Guendouzi, who has been impressive for the club in recent matches.

"Can you imagine Patrick Vieira on the pitch on Monday night? He would have been shouting at his team-mates, asking them: 'What the f*ck are you doing?'

"I don't see that with Xhaka. I do with Guendouzi - he's one of the few who shows he wants to win every game. He's got a lion's heart.

"Guendouzi is relied upon a lot by [Unai] Emery, and that's because he's showing anger on the pitch. He hates to lose games, you can see that he's ready to fight for every single ball. He plays to his strengths and he does that well.

Arsenal were disappointing against the newly-promoted side, suffering their second defeat of the current campaign to leave them in fifth spot.

They next host Portuguese side Vitoria on Thursday night in the Europa League, hoping to pick a third consecutive win in the competition.
