COPA Africa: Kenya denied a podium finish by Zambia

Defending champions Kenya has been denied a podium finish after going 2-1 down to Zambia in the third-place playoff staged at the MPESA Foundation on Thursday 5 December.

Sifue Kuse grabbed a brace for the Zambians with his first being a sumptuous free kick in the third minute this after they had won a free-kick just as the edge of the box,

Kenya’s response came through Joel Elisha in the sixth minute through a penalty. After giving their all in ensuring that they rescued the game, the referee was to hand them the penalty gift in the fifth minute after striker Leonard Okuku had been brought down in the box.

Zambia, however, regained their lead in the ninth minute three minutes later with Kuse being the scorer once again: the striker who had caused the home side all the problems in the earlier proceedings slotting past Ismael Tole after a slick move by the visitors.

Zambia had a chance of extending their lead in the 23rd minute when they were awarded a penalty of their own but Davis Shawaisha effort came off the upright.

The second half proved to be a fruitless affair with Kenyan keeper Tole being at his best to prevent further embarrassment by pulling two super saves. The first was a punch from an Innocent Khoma stinger before tipping over a headed corner from Jones Pensulu.
