According to former Bayern Munich and Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack, Germany champions Bayern are the favourites to proceed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, ahead of their clash.
Ballack, who won multiple titles with both teams believes that Bayern has the edge in this tie, despite what Chelsea and Frank Lampard are doing in the manager's first season in charge.
Chelsea, who finished second in Group H in the group stages behind Valencia, had a later panic for its fans, before progressing at the expense of last season’s semi-finalists Ajax.
Bayern, on the other hand, won all their group stages matches and progressed with no real blocks.
‘Bayern are favourites, for many reasons,’ Ballack said.
‘Experience speaks strongly in their favour. Chelsea’s transfer ban has compelled them to put their faith in young players. Their manager is new and inexperienced in his job, and that is a big advantage for Bayern.
‘The performance levels of Bayern’s players are another plus for them. They are more stable than they were last autumn. Chelsea have a young team, which has the potential to explode. They have mostly young players, a bit like Borussia Dortmund.’
Before this massive long awaited tie, Lampard’s Chelsea faces Manchester United on Monday evening while Bayern Munich will be in action on Sunday against Cologne in the Bundesliga.
