Moroccan club Raja Casablanca's 2-0 home win over TP Mazembe in a CAF Champions League match on Saturday was tainted by a racist post on social media by a section of club's fans.
According to the Moroccan website, sport.le360.ma, a post by an account run by a radical group of Raja fans labelled Wydad fans supporting the Congolese club as "apes".
"The Raja ultras wanted to taunt Wydad fans who were supporting TP Mazembe. They made an illustration of hominid, with characteristics of neanderthal man and as a primate dressed in Wydad jersey but with Mazembe crest," the website reported.
The image was posted on Facebook and was accompanied by a caption: "Congolese nationals in Morocco must be sad!"
The racist image was met with ironic indignation as Congolese star Ben Malango was the hero of the night for Raja after he opened the scoring in the first half.
The post was condemned by various football stakeholders in Morocco as the country has been very welcoming to players from Sub-Saharan nations.
