TP Mazembe new coach Cvetkovic switches focus on Lubumbashi Derby

Newly appointed TP Mazembe coach Drazen Cvetkovic hit the ground running as he led charges in a training session ahead of Saturday's derby against FC Saint Eloi Lupopo at Kenya stadium.

Cvetkovic took over after Pamphile Mihayo was sacked and sent to Europe for further training by TP Mazembe owner Moise Katumbi. However, it is not clear when Mihayo and his assistant Charles Musonda will leave for the training.

The Serbian was until Saturday afternoon the technical director at the club but has now been charged with the task of managing the Ravens for the rest of the season.

Speaking after conducting his first training session, Cvetkovic said that he expects the players to be committed for the rest of the season.

“The players had a lot of fun and were receptive to my instructions. Every player must show their ability and skills going forward. We now shift our focus to winning the L1," he told the club's official website.

Commenting on the CAF Champions League exit, he rued the missed chances his charges had.

“We are leaving the CAF Champions League after winning the last match. We had possession and opportunities; unfortunately, the events were unfavourable. Our ultimate goal is to win the next game, the derby."

The Derby against local rivals Lupopo is not an easy match and has its a fair share of emotional drama but the new tactician is treating it like any other game.

“It's a derby with the aspects and the emotions but it's still a football match that we have to work hard to win. We have a lot of respect for our opponents but we are motivated and prepared for this game. It is time we assert our authority on the championship," he added.

TP Mazembe are currently on top of the league with 53 points after 20 matches played while Lupopo are languishing in 11th position with 24 points having played two more matches.
