UEFA president: Nothing should stop Liverpool from winning the league

Liverpool should not be denied the English Premier League title this season despite the coronavirus pandemic, UEAF president Aleksander Ceferin has said.

Liverpool were just two victories away from securing their maiden Premiership title and their first First Division title since 1990. The league was halted in Britain, like hundreds of countries, died to the Covid-19 outbreak.

There have been calls from unnamed clubs and players to have the season voided but Cefarin has said that Liverpool should not be denied their glory despite the current state of football globally.

"I see no way for Liverpool to stay untitled," he told Slovenian sports daily Ekipa. "If the championship resumes, they will almost certainly win it -- theoretically, it has not yet reached the guaranteed level, but it is practically close.

"However, if it could not be played, it would also be necessary to announce the results in some way and find some key on how the champions should be determined. And, of course, again I do not see a scenario in which that would not be Liverpool."

Cefarin has at the same time said that any league that will end early without permission could face a ban from European competitions next season.

Belgium became the first European top-tier league to cancel the rest of its season last week with Club Brugge crowned champions. There's growing pressure in the Netherlands to have the league cancelled and declare Ajax champions.
