🏆 Champions League quarterfinals betting preview: Tactics, team news, predictions & tips

We've reached the quarterfinal stages of the Champions League which will be contested in an exciting, never-before-seen format in Portugal.

Here's the lowdown on each last-eight encounter as we edge closer to finding out which team will land the most coveted prize in European club football.

🏟 Atalanta vs PSG

This season's surprise package Atalanta has reached the Champions League quarterfinals in their first-ever campaign in the competition. They scored 98 goals in Serie A but defensive issues will be the major hurdle between them and the semifinals. PSG has been far from their free-flowing best in recent cup matches, beating Saint-Étienne 1-0 in the French Cup final and then finally edging out Lyon on penalties in the Coupe de la Ligue final after a goalless 90 minutes. On the neutral ground in Portugal, it's difficult to know what to expect in a once-off quarterfinal, but both sides have goals in them for sure.

This should be an outstandingly entertaining contest. Atalanta is known to press high in the opposition half and man-mark in their own half and these tactics will lead to mistakes by both sides and consequently chances. Even with Kylian Mbappé likely to be sidelined, this will be a classic between two sides committed to playing attacking, swashbuckling football.

🏟 RB Leipzig vs Atlético Madrid

Julian Nagelsmann's Leipzig team employs a 3-5-2 formation with a high press that aims to create counter-attacking opportunities after winning the ball back in dangerous situations. Without the departed Timo Werner, however, who joined Chelsea before the conclusion of this season, the system is missing its most important cog. Diego Simeone's Atlético will go all-out defence to suffocate Leipzig's passing options without the threat of 24-year-old Werner's explosive pace off the mark. Atlético was excellent over two legs against Liverpool in the round of 16 and similar fighting qualities should be on display here with the excellent and much-in-demand midfield general Thomas Partey anchoring the engine room, something his manager did with distinction in the 90s.

🏟 Barcelona vs Bayern Munich

A Lionel Messi-inspired Barcelona side got the better of Napoli 4-2 on aggregate in the round of 16. They'll have experienced defensive midfield duo Arturo Vidal and Sergio Busquets back from suspension which is a timely boost ahead of this crunch quarterfinal with Bayern Munich. The German side-swept Chelsea aside 7-1 on aggregate and look imperious, spearheaded by goal-machine Robert Lewandowski. Bayern's incredible winning run means that they have all the momentum and they should win a high-quality last eight match. Thomas Müller, fresh from a Bundesliga season in which he plundered a record 21 assists, will be a major headache for the returning Vidal and Busquets as they somehow try to come up a strategy that will protect their back four against the Bayern machine. The young German outfit is too direct, too quick and too strong for an ageing Barcelona side.

🏟 Man City vs Lyon

Lyon's 2-1 defeat to Juventus them edged into the quarterfinals 2-2 on aggregate by virtue of away goals. It was their first competitive outing since March and you've got to think that match fitness will be a huge factor against Pep Guardiola's excellent Man City side, who were clinical by dispatching Real Madrid. The French side will likely have around 35-40% ball possession and this will afford the likes of Kevin De Bruyne to dictate the tempo with his proactive, physical playing style. Lyon has a trio of dangermen in the shape of Houssem Aouar, Memphis Depay and Moussa Dembélé, but Man City's double midfield pivot of Ilkay Gundogan and Rodri should have the discipline and tactical smarts to win the battle.
