Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns played to a 1-1 draw against Highlands Park on Friday night.
Pitso Mosimane's side needed to claim three points in order to go a single point behind Kaizer Chiefs with five more games to the end, but unfortunately dropped two points.
Highlands Park took a shock lead when Peter Shalulile sneaked behind Sundowns' defense to smash home a flying shot past Denis Onyango on six minutes.
It was until the second half when Sundowns grabbed the leveler. The returning Gaston Sirino whipped in a peach of a cross to Sphelele Mkhulise header, who made no mistake for 1-1.
The Lions of the North missed two more chances before substitute Lyle Lakay saw his late free kick flying so close but wide of goal on 89 minutes.
The match ended 1-1 and the result means Chiefs have a chance to go six points ahead if they beat Polokwane City on Saturday.
