BREAKING: Virgil van Dijk to be out for several months with knee injury

Liverpool will be without the services of defender Virgil van Dijk for several months after he picked up an injury during the Merseyside derby, Goal reports.

Van Dijk had to leave the pitch after 11 minutes of action following a serious challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

According to reports, the Dutch international was sent to the hospital to undergo scans to determine the extent of the injury and it was discovered that he has knee ligament damage.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will be hoping for Joe Gomez and Joel Matip to remain fit throughout the season to provide cover in the void that Van Dijk has left.

Klopp can also make use of midfielder Fabinho as his centre-back while Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum can also come in handy in the backline if push comes to shove.

There is also the possibility of youngsters Billy Koumetio, Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips being given the opportunity to step up to the plate despite being big shoes to fill.
