The club further confirmed that the 35-year-old Rooney has been handed a two and a half-year contract, which follows after two months since the club parted ways with Phillip Cocu while Rooney was still a player-coach.
Derby, who are placed 22nd in the 24-club league, will see Rooney debut in the dugout at home to Rothernham United on Saturday.
