πŸ” Man City 2-0 Aston Villa: Silva, Gundogan score late on to send Guardiola's side top

Manchester City moved to the top of the English Premier League table with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Wednesday night in an entertaining clash played at the Etihad Stadium.

Bernardo Silva scored a controversial opener with 12 minutes to go, before Ilkay Gundogan sealed the win in the 90th minute from the penalty spot.

Pep Guardiola's side enjoyed much of the possession, but could not break a stubborn Villa side that opted to hit them the counter.

The match got off to an exciting start with the hosts threatening as early as the fourth minute as Emiliano Martinez reacted quickly to keep out a superb Bernando Silva shot.

Villa then hit City with a quick counter-attack in the ninth minute led by Ross Barkley, but the Chelsea loanee made a wrong call when he tried to find Jack Grealish on the far side but Cancelo intercepted.

City then kept knocking and missed two chances with the lively Phil Foden showing his class in attack.

Guardiola was however forced into an early change as Kyle Walker picked an injury and was replaced by Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Despite their chances and possession, City were forced to settle for a scoreless opening half.

The second period started on the wrong footing for City, as talisman Kevin De Bruyne was forced off with a thigh injury, and replaced by Gabriel Jesus.

Both sides missed a host of chances, with Gundogan, Jesus, and Sterling all coming close to opening the scores.

It however happened in the 79th minute as Silva found the net with a super strike, even though the goal was questionable as Rodri appeared to be in an offside position as he dispossessed Tyrone Mings and squared it for the Portuguese to score.

City were then awarded a spot-kick after Cash handled the ball, and Gundogan easily converted past Martinez.

The win saw City move to the top of the table for the first time this season, even though Man United could leapfrog them if they beat Fulham in the last match of the night.
