Pique claims Italy was handed an advantage over Spain in penalty shootout

Former Spain defender Gerard Pique has claimed that Italy was given an advantage over Spain in the semi-final penalty shootout on Tuesday night.

According to Pique, Italy was given an unfair advantage over their opponents since they were handed the mandate to go first in the shootout.

“It’s no coincidence that in the last four penalty shootouts at Euro 2020 and the Copa America, the team that went first won. Statistics show that going first leaves you with more options and in a tournament like this it doesn’t seem fair to me that a draw should make you start at a disadvantage," Pique tweeted.

Italy was to break the deadlock in regular time when a ruthless counter-attack instigated by Gianluigi Donnarumma was finished by Federico Chiesa. Spain however got back on level terms heading into the final ten minutes through Alvaro Morata after being played in by Dani Olmo.

Morata however went from hero to villain in the penalty shootout after missing a decisive penalty for Spain that enabled Jorginho to convert the winning kick; the result seeing Italy setting up a final against either Denmark or England who faces each other in the other semi-final on Wednesday.
