Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood says Arsenal should have signed Lewis Dunk instead of Ben White.
Arsenal coughed up £50million to secure the signing of White from Brighton last summer with the 23-year-old enduring a testing start at north London. The England international struggled in the opening match against Brentford but has now done better, helping the Gunners to secure two consecutive clean sheets against Norwich and Burnley after forming a partnership with Gabriel.
However, Sherwood believes Arsenal needed Dunk more than Ben White.
"Everyone who partners Lewis Dunk seems to get a move," Sherwood told Optus Sport.
"For what Arsenal actually requires, it was Dunk and not Ben White if I’m honest."
"He’s always missed out. There are too many scalps looking at what he can’t do instead of what he can do. It’s great for Brighton that he’s still there. He puts his body on the line and really cares. Arsenal are weak, they don’t attack the first ball – Dunk does that. But they chose to go for White."
The Gunners will be up against north London rivals Tottenham on Sunday.
