European Roundup: Juventus drop to ninth after another loss as Bayern bounce back

Juventus woes in Serie A continued with another shocking 2-1 defeat at the hands of Verona on Saturday.

It was the fourth defeat this season for the Massimiliano Allegri's; a result that leaves them ninth on the table. In the game, Giovanni Simeone scored twice in three minutes to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. Weston McKennie reduced the arrears with 10 minutes remaining, but there was to be no late reprieve for the visitors.

Napoli can consolidate first place at Salernitana on Sunday, while Milan travels to fourth-placed Roma later that evening.

In Spain, Real Madrid moved to the top spot following their 2-1 win over Elche in a game that saw the hosts reduced to ten men three minutes after the hour mark.

The visitors opened the scoring through Vinicius Junior midway through the first half with Elche's Raul Guti sent off for a rash challenge on Toni Kroos before the Brazilian doubled his and Madrid's lead with a cool finish from Luka Modric's pass. Pere Milla scored late on to give Elche hope, but Real held on.

In the same league, Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw in their first game since the sacking of Ronald Koeman in a game that saw Sergio Aguero taken to hospital with breathing problems.

After their shock defeat in a midweek Cup game, Bayern Munich returned back to winning ways with a 5-2 win over Union Berlin.

Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring from the penalty spot before doubling the visitors' lead eight minutes later. Goals from Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman on either side of Niko Giesselmann's effort made it 4-1.

Julian Ryerson gave Union a slim hope with 25 minutes remaining, but Thomas Muller completed the scoring.

The win keeps Julian Nagelsmann's side one point clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who maintained the pressure on the league leaders with a 2-0 win at home to Cologne.

What of the Premier League?

There were two games in the French Ligue One on Saturday where Lyon beat Lens 2-1 with the game between St Etienne and Metz ending in a 1-1 draw.
