European Roundup: Juventus defeat Roma in a comeback win as Sevilla keeps Madrid at bay

Juventus came from behind to beat AS Roma 4-3 in an entertaining Serie A match played on Sunday evening.

Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham had given Roma the lead earlier on but his strike was canceled by Paulo Dybala as both sides went to the break on a 1-1 draw. Hosts Roma came back in the second half a different team and scored early in the half through Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Lorenzo Pellegrini.

Juventus were not going to give up easily and scored two goal in two minutes through Manuel Locatelli and Dejan Kulusevski to put matters leveled with Mattia De Sciglio firing home a fourth on the 77th minute.

Roma were awarded a penalty after Matthijs de Ligt was shown a second yellow for handball with nine minutes remaining, but Szczesny guessed the right way to save Pellegrini’s penalty in front of a stunned home crowd.

With the win, Juventus moved up to 38 points in fifth place, six points ahead of eighth-placed Roma.

In other matches in the Serie A, Inter Milan went on top of the table thanks to a 2-1 win over Lazio on a day that saw Napoli earning a 1-0 win over Sampdoria. Luis Muriel struck twice as Atalanta won 6-2 against a Covid hist Udinese who were without 12 first-team players.

In the Bundesliga, Wolfsburg lost their eighth consecutive match in all competition after going 1-0 down to fellow strugglers Bochum. The other match saw Cologne continue their bid for European football next year with a 3-1 win at Hertha Berlin.

In France, Thilo Kehrer salvaged a 1-1 draw for Paris St Germain at Lyon as coach Mauricio Pochettino’s second-half substitutions paid dividends to extend their Ligue 1 lead to 11 points.

Earlier, Nice reclaimed the second spot when they beat Stade Brestois 3-0 away despite being reduced to 10 men in the first half.

In Laliga, Sevilla kept in touch with leaders Real Madrid with a 1-0 home win against Getafe; Rafa Mir scored the goal in the first half.

Atletico Madrid struggles continued as they had Geoffrey Kondogbia to thank for rescuing a point for them in their 2-2 draw with Villarreal as Iván Balliu canceled out Sergio Canales’ opener for Real Betis to earn Rayo Vallecano a 1-1 draw, with the away side playing much of the match with 10 men after Alex Moreno’s red card after half an hour.

Osasuna beat Cádiz 2-0 while Alavés and Athletic Bilbao contested a goalless draw.
