Esteban Obiang scored the only goal of the match as Equatorial Guinea stunned Africa Cup of Nations defending champions Algeria 1-0 on Sunday evening.
The north Africans went into the match on the back of a 0-0 draw against Sierra Leone in the opening match and were desperate to win their first maximum points.
It was not to be though as a 70th minute Obiang goal settled the match, leaving the Riyad Mahrez-led team staring early elimination.
Algeria started the match on the right foot, pressing their opponents as they went in search of an early goal.
After a bruising half of the first period, Algeria had a chance in the 23rd minute and Baghdad Bounedjah managed to put the ball in the back of the net, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside.
Pablo Ganet and Iban Salvador both had chances to score for Equatorial Guinea, but their efforts could not find the back of the net with the goalkeeper making a save as the other went inches off the post.
The second half was a balanced affair as both teams went all out in search of the elusive goal, with Mahrez and Youcef Belaili all trying their luck on a number of occasions.
It was Equatorial Guinea though who took the lead against the run of play with 20 minutes to go as Obiang received a delightful pass inside the box and smashed a low shot into the bottom right corner.
