AFCON 2021: Mali beat Mauritania to top Group F, Tunisia squeeze through despite finishing third

Mali finished top of Group F at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon after beating Mauritania 2-0 in the last group match on Thursday evening.

Mali went into the match having already qualified for the next round but needed a win while hoping for a draw in the other group match to finish top of the pile.

They got the perfect start at the Japoma Stadium in Douala as left full back Massadio Haidara fired them ahead inside two minutes to set them on the path to victory.

The Eagles then controlled the proceedings, coming close on a number of occasions as they sought to double their advantage.

Mauritania however kept them at bay for long periods thanks to desperate defending and good goalkeeping.

Mali finally got their chance again early in the second half as Moussa Doumbia won a penalty following Harouna Abou's challenge inside the area, their third of the tournament.

Ibrahima Kone stepped up to easily beat the goalie from 12 yards and send Mohamed Magassouba's charges to the top of Group F.

In the other group match, Gambia beat Tunisia 1-0 in Limbé to secure second place behind Mali.

Ablle Jallow scored the only goal of the match deep in injury time to send their supporters into wild celebrations.

The Carthage Eagles, have had a tournament to forget so far with just one win so far, but miraculously squeezed through as one of the best third-place sides ahead of bottom place Mauritania.
