Ex-Arsenal captain Vermaelen retires from international football

Thomas Vermaelen has announced retirement from international football and is poised to be named as the assistant coach of the Belgium national team.

Vermaelen signed a two-year contract with J1 League side Vissel Kobe in 2019 after leaving Spanish giants Barcelona. The 36-year-old became a free agent in December after his contract with Kobe expired in December.

As reported by Belgian news-site HLN, the former Arsenal man is set to become the assistant coach to Roberto Martinez.

"Vermaelen is the perfect man in Martinez's eyes. Even more so because he knows this group like no other," the report claimed.

Thomas Vermaelen will replace Scot Shaun Maloney who left his role to become Hibernian manager.

During his time with Kobe, Vermaelen helped the J1 League side to win the Emperor's Cup, their first domestic trophy.
