Kenya and Zimbabwe removed from AFCON qualifiers

Kenya and Zimbabwe have been eliminated from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification process after failing to comply with FIFA sanctions.

The football associations of the two countries were suspended by FIFA in February due to "undue involvement by a third party," and they were suspended by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for "political meddling."

Kenya and Zimbabwe were included in the 2023 AFCON draw by CAF in April on the condition that they successfully challenged their FIFA suspension.

However, CAF claims that the two nations "have not yet completed the requirements needed by the FIFA Congress as a prerequisite for removing their ban," despite qualification for the event starting next month.

Only three teams will remain in their original groups, with the top two still qualifying for the tournament.

Kenya was assigned to Group C, which included Burundi, Cameroon, and Namibia. Zimbabwe was grouped alongside Liberia, Morocco, and South Africa in Group K.

The 2023 AFCON will take place in Ivory Coast.
