Manchester United are on the brink of acquiring the services of Roma centre-back Kostas Manolas according to reports.

United are desperate to beef up their leaking backline and want the deal done and dusted this month to avoid losing out on the 27-year-old when his release clause becomes active in the summer.

Despite being linked with a number of defenders including Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld and Leicester’s Harry Maguire in the last few months, the Premier League giants have failed to complete any signings.

United’s pursuit of the reliable defender will be boosted by his own admission back in the summer when he said: “It’s only natural you want to play for the bigger clubs, like Barcelona, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.”
