Stats: Girona vs Real Madrid

Early exchanges

Looking to win the first Copa del Rey since 2014 and end Barcelona's monopoly in the competition, Real Madrid set to complete the job after a 4-2 win in the first leg. Girona who were making their first-ever appearance in the quarterfinals of the competition matched Real Madrid's game plan as the game was off to a slow start. The first effort on target in the game came in the 24th minute when Toni Kroos' tame effort was easily gathered by the keeper.

Benzema goal

The effort made way to the first goal two minutes later when Karim Benzema played a wall pass with Dani Carvajal then released a shot at the edge of the 18-yard area to rattle the bottom left net and wrong-foot the keeper as the Frenchman wheeled away in celebration.

Benzema brace

Real Madrid doubled their lead in the 43rd minute when Vinicius drew two defenders before cutting back the ball to Benzema who took one touch before curling the ball into the bottom right corner for his 17th goal in all competitions this season.

Stuani chance

Girona's best chance of the half fell to Cristhian Stuani who was fed by Granell but the Uruguayan failed to score from point-blank range, with Keylor Navas parring the ball away as the half time whistle ensued.

Second half

Real Madrid came back into the second half strong looking to put the tie to bed and almost did that in the 64th minute when Marco Asensio's shot was blocked by Gorka Iraizoz but only as far as Lucas Vasquez who failed to put the ball into the open net as his effort cannoned off the upright.

Porro goal

Girona halved the deficit in the 72nd minute when Alex Pachon played a neat through ball to Pedro Porro after a lightning fast counter for Porro to bag his first goal of the season, slotting the ball past the onrushing Navas.

Llorente goal

Any hopes of a Girona miraculous come back was extinguished three minutes later when Dani Ceballos set up Marcos Llorente who got past Luiz to release a thunderbolt that found the back of the net from outside the box for his second goal of the season.
