Turkish giants Fenerbahce had Islam Slimani to thank as they hold a slender 1-0 advantage over Zenit Saint Petersburg heading into the second leg of the UEFA Europa League Round of 32 clash on Tuesday 12th February.
With only one point separating themselves from the relegation zone, Fenerbache were looking to salvage their season with a strong push in the Europa League. Their good start to the game was finally rewarded in the 20th minute when Islam Slimani received second pickings after Zenit failed to deal with Mathieu Valbuena's corner as the Algerian stubbed home the opener.
Zenit were handed a route back into the game when the referee awarded them a penalty after Sebastian Driussi was brought down by Mehmet Topal inside the box. Up stepped Roberto Mak who failed to hold his nerve as Harun Tekin produced a spectacular save to pushed the ball onto the crossbar before he gathered the ball in the nick of time.
The second half had chances few and far between with Zenit on a mission of damage limitation heading into the second leg of the clash. Fenerbache also attacked with caution avoiding to concede the much dreaded away goal that would Zenit the advantage.
