Kikomeko happy with first win as Kirinya's new head coach

14 Feb 2019, 11:00

Abbey Kikomeko picked up his first victory since taking over the reins at Kirinya-Jinja as the team left their hearts on the field with a 1-0 win over Police FC on Tuesday, February 12 at Might Arena.

Joel Madondo was on target in the lone goal for Kirinya five minutes from the halftime break, making it his tenth goal of the season.

It was the first win for head coach Kikomeko who was taking charge of his fourth game since the departure of Charles Ayeikho.

“It is important that we started winning games,” Kikomeko said as quoted by the club website.

“This is our first win this year as well as second overall at home. It is important to me because we have worked hard to rectify some errors."

“We lost to Vipers and drawn with Onduparaka and Tooro United in my first three games so a win comes at the right time. We have to build and maintain this shape as we approach our next games."

"The win will motivate everyone as we continue with this journey to help the club finish in a respectable position.”

Kikomeko was impressed with his side not conceding and believes victory will push the side to pick more points.

“The team had been conceding very early goals so we have tried to work on our defensive approach. So we changed the strategy of defending.

"We have tried to make sure that we contain the opponents in the opening periods and then attack them when they cool down."

“Otherwise, I congratulate my players because they have given their all out. They looked at the table and realised that we needed to push harder and that is what they are doing.

"They are very motivated and you can see that they give their all to pick points.”

Kirinya-Jinja SS is currently tenth on the Uganda Premier League log with 24 points from 19 matches. They visit URA at Namboole on Thursday, February 21.
