Revealed: Why Liverpool need Mane more than Salah
Former England defender Jammie Carragher has claimed Sadio Mane is a key player to Liverpool compared to Mohammed Salah, as the team challenges for the English Premier League title with only a few matches remaining.
The two players have been key for the Red's title push and were both on the scoresheet on Sunday night as Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield to go top of the table.
Interestingly, Salah and Mane are battling for the Golden Boot, with their goals on Sunday taking them to 19 and 18 goals respectively. City's Sergio Aguero joins Salah as the joint top scorer, and there are indications that the battle will head down to the wire.
"They’ve got the same amount of goals. I’m a massive fan of Mane. People talk about Jurgen Klopp and the signing of Salah, unbelievable… Van Dijk. Mane’s the one that got Liverpool back. He was Klopp’s first big signing £30m. He was the first signing that got Liverpool back into the top four, the next season was Champions League final, this one is challenging for the title so he’s the one that’s been there from the very start," Carragher said during the Monday Night Football show on Sky Sports.
"I’d go as far as to say if we had Sadio Mane in that team in 2009 we would have possibly won the league, that was the only thing that was really lacking," he added.
The Sunday win saw Liverpool soar to the top of the table with 85 points, two ahead of their closest title challengers and defending champions Manchester City, who are on 82 points but with a match at hand.
The Reds will now turn their attention to this week's Champions League return leg tie against Porto, whom they hold a 2-0 lead from their first-leg win at Anfield.
