If you'd like to know more about Atletico Madrid's young talented centre back José Giménez, you've come to the right place!

Player bio & intro 📊

It's not often that a 24-year-old has already amassed 49 caps for their country, and perhaps that is the first marker of José Giménez's quality as a player.  He is the youngest player in Uruguay history to make his debut for the country, aged 19 at the time.

  • Age: 24
  • Club: Atlético Madrid
  • Position: Centre back
  • Estimated transfer value: €70m

Strengths & playing style 🥊

Giménez has formed an almost legendary partnership with fellow Uruguayan Diego Godin in the heart of Atlético Madrid's miserly defence under Diego Simeone. Of course, having Jan Oblak between the sticks has helped the Madrid side to numerous clean sheets, but Gimenez and Godin have been the cornerstones of Atleti's back four.

Giménez as an individual is an aggressive, proactive centre back who's virtually flawless in the air. His high level of anticipation helps him clear danger often, and his preferred style out of defence is to go long and seek teammates with lofted balls.  The Uruguayan is a rugged, committed and tough-tackling centre back who's quick off the mark and difficult to knock off the ball. There's no doubt that he has the potential to become one of the world's finest defenders and looks set to become a centurion for his country.

He's also set to take on a more senior role at Atlético with Diego Godin moving on. His progress will definitely be worth watching.

Weaknesses 👀

Giménez can be hot-headed and lose his temper at times, and that can lead to him giving the ball away carelessly either out of impatience or frustration. His short passing game certainly needs work, but it's the only genuine weakness in his game on a technical level.

On social media 🗣📱

Giménez's compatriot and long-time teammate, Diego Godin, has recently announced that he will be leaving the Spanish capital. Gimenez took to social media to pay tribute to Godin.
