Boost for Manchester clubs as Benfica release Joao statement
Benfica have issued a statement denying that a deal had been struck with Atletico Madrid for talented winger Felix Joao.
On Monday, reports emerged from Spain that Madrid had won the race in signing Felix, beating both Manchester United and Manchester City. The news seemed to hand a huge blow to the Manchester clubs as the pair had hoped to lure the youngster to the Premier League. Following those reports, though, Benfica issued a statement that strongly denied a deal had been struck with Atletico for the talented teenager.
"In view of the set of news published in these last hours, Sport Lisboa e Benfica - Futebol, SAD clarifies that it is false that any negotiation process is currently underway regarding a possible transfer of player João Félix,” a statement from the
"More serious, and that deserves our most vehement repudiation and denial, is the false news that refers to negotiations that involve commissions of 30% and which, unfortunately, was echoed in Portugal by the newspaper A Bola, with intentions and goals that we do not know at all.”
Felix’s contract with the club is set to expire in the summer of 2023.
