Harambee Stars Player Profile: John Avire

With Harambee Stars, head coach Sebastien Migne naming his squad for the upcoming 2019 African Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt, Futaa looks at the profiles of the players who will represent Kenya in the continental showpiece.

John Avire

DOB: March 12, 1997

Current Club: Sofapaka FC, Kenya

Previous Club: Mount Kenya United (Kenya), Bandari FC (Kenya), Kakamega Homeboyz (Kenya)

One player who has been considered as an outsider to the team. Avire inclusion to the national team emanates from his performances in the Kenya U23 team that lost in the 2020 Olympic Qualifiers to Sudan.

Having bagged seven goals in the just concluded Kenyan Premier League season with Sofapaka, Avire’s abilities have never been in doubt since his school days and his stint with Nakumatt FC (now Mount Kenya United) showed what he was capable of.

His inclusion had mixed reactions considering Migne had to leave 18 goal man Allan Wanga and Jesse Were behind but those close to the boss has said that his work ethic has endeared him closer to Migne and he will surely be in the national team fold in future assignments.

He is surely in AFCON to pick lessons as he is just the third choice striker behind Olunga and Masud Juma.
